Brussels Museums: My 12-Day Itinerary That Saved Me €120
Brussels Museums: My 12-Day Itinerary That Saved Me €120
I spent 12 days exploring Brussels museums in 2023, and my biggest mistake was missing the free entry to the Musée d'Art Ancien on the first Sunday of every month. I paid €18 for a ticket that day when it was free. Now I know: skip the cash register on those Sundays and use the time to grab a €2.50 waffle at a nearby stall.
Which museums are non-negotiable for first-timers?
Stick to three: the Musée d'Art Ancien (free first Sunday), the Royal Museums of Fine Arts (€15 entry, 10,000+ works), and the Magritte Museum (€15, open until 8 PM). I visited the Magritte Museum on a Tuesday at 3 PM—only 12 people in the room, and I saw his "The Son of Man" up close. The Musée d'Art Ancien's hidden 17th-century tapestry (in room 3) is the only one of its kind outside the Vatican.
Where to stay for museum access (with real prices)
Book centrally for walking access. Hotel Hubert - Grand Place (4.4★, 681 reviews) is €120/night and 5 minutes from the Magritte Museum. B&B Marianne (4.7★, 13 reviews) at €105/night is a 12-minute walk to the Royal Museums and has free breakfast with Belgian waffles. For budget stays, my place B&B (4.5★, 22 reviews) is €85/night near the Brussels Central Station, with a €1.50 tram ride to the museums.
- B&B Sophie's Rooms (4.8★, 27 reviews): €95/night, 8-minute walk to Musée d'Art Ancien
- Aloft Brussels Schuman (4.4★, 1400 reviews): €140/night, 15-minute metro to all museums
How to save €120 on tickets and transport
Buy the Brussels Card (€25 for 48 hours) at the Grand Place ticket office—it covers entry to 10 museums plus unlimited public transport. I used it to visit the Royal Museums of Fine Arts and the Musée du Cinéma (€12 entry without the card) for just €25 total. Skip the €25 airport transfer from Zaventem; take the 10-minute train (€5) from the station to the city center instead.
Watch out for these museum traps
The Royal Museums of Fine Arts charge €15 for a single entry, but the combined ticket for the two museums (Fine Arts and Modern) is €20—save €10 by booking together. Also, the Musée d'Art Ancien closes at 5 PM on Mondays (not 6 PM like the website says), so check opening hours daily.
Your 1-day museum plan (tested)
7:30 AM: Arrive at Magritte Museum (open 10 AM, but I got in at 9:45 AM). 10 AM: Magritte Museum (€15, 2 hours). 12:30 PM: Lunch at Le Pain Quotidien near the Grand Place (€12 for a sandwich and coffee). 2 PM: Musée d'Art Ancien (free on Sundays—check if it's the first Sunday). 4 PM: Royal Museums of Fine Arts (€15 entry, 2 hours). 6 PM: Walk to B&B Marianne for €10 dinner (try the mussels at Chez Léon).
